Williams to Face Joint in Wimbledon Opener
Newsroom

The Wimbledon 2026 draw took place on June 8, with American superstar Serena Williams set to make her highly anticipated singles comeback against Australian world number 53 Maya Joint in the first round. Williams, a seven-time women's champion at the All England Club, has been granted a wildcard to restart her singles career at the age of 44, having not competed since the US Open in 2022. Joint, aged 20, lost in the first round during her Wimbledon main-draw debut last year and has won only one of her last 14 matches.
British number one Emma Raducanu, seeded 30th, is scheduled to face Croatia's Antonia Ruzic; however, concerns over her fitness have emerged after she skipped practice on June 8 due to a shin injury. Raducanu might encounter top seed Aryna Sabalenka in the third round, replicating last year's scenario.
Meanwhile, in the men's draw, Britain's Jack Draper is set to contend with American sixth seed Taylor Fritz in a challenging first-round match. Draper is continuing his return after a series of injuries and reached the Eastbourne semi-finals in his first tournament since April.
All eyes are also on seven-time champion Novak Djokovic, who begins his quest for an outright record 25th Grand Slam title against China's Wu Yibing. World number one Jannik Sinner returns to action after a shocking second-round exit at the French Open, starting against Serbia's Miomir Kecmanovic. However, Carlos Alcaraz will not participate at SW19 as he recovers from a wrist injury. Reigning women's champion Iga Swiatek is slated to defend her title against American Taylor Townsend.
During the women's draw ceremony, attention centered on Williams's placement, which sparked intense anticipation. As a wildcard entry, she could have faced formidable opponents like Sabalenka or Swiatek but instead drew 20-year-old Joint in what appears to be a winnable match. Joint expressed excitement and nervousness about competing against Williams, highlighting her own grass-court success by winning the Eastbourne title last year.
If Williams advances, she may meet 29th seed Alexandra Eala of the Philippines next, with a potential matchup against Swiatek looming in the third round. In addition to her singles return, Williams has participated in two doubles matches so far this month and will compete with her older sister, Venus, in the Wimbledon doubles event, which they have won six times.
The draw features a robust British contingent, supported by wildcards from the All England Club. Notably, Draper must confront a challenging opener against Fritz, who reached the Wimbledon semi-finals last year. Cameron Norrie, seeded 26th, leads the British draw, starting his campaign against American qualifier Michael Zheng. Other notable matchups include Raducanu, who may face former French Open champion Jelena Ostapenko in the second round, and a strong showing in the qualifiers, with twelve British players receiving wildcards.
