MLB Trade Deadline: Catchers Likely on the Move

As the MLB Trade Deadline approaches, the market for catchers has emerged as a significant topic alongside the usual focus on pitching. According to an NL executive, "There are about a half-dozen teams looking for catching help," but there aren’t enough catchers available to satisfy this demand. The teams actively seeking upgrades at the position include the New York Yankees, Boston Red Sox, Tampa Bay Rays, Chicago White Sox, Texas Rangers, and Los Angeles Dodgers. However, their urgency to acquire catching talent varies.

Several catchers previously considered trade candidates are now less likely to be moved. Shea Langeliers, who would have commanded a significant return, suffered a torn meniscus, prematurely ending his season. Hunter Goodman, with three years of team control left, is also a tough trade prospect for the Colorado Rockies, where president of baseball operations Paul DePodesta is unlikely to let him go without an impressive offer. Additionally, while Adley Rutschman has just one year of control left, trading him could indicate that the Baltimore Orioles are conceding, particularly as they are currently in the AL Wild Card race.

One name frequently mentioned in trade talks is Ryan Jeffers from the Minnesota Twins, thanks to his strong performance and impending free agency. However, with the Twins likely aiming to strengthen their roster rather than dismantle it, Jeffers' availability remains uncertain as he isn’t expected to be traded unless the team faces a disastrous week.

Another potential trade candidate is Liam Hicks of the Miami Marlins, who is regarded as an intriguing option. Hicks has 14 home runs and a .796 OPS as of Tuesday, and Miami seems willing to listen to offers for him as they already have depth at the catcher position.

Tyler Stephenson, another player who could be appealing in trade discussions, has shown improved hitting recently. He has raised his OPS by 120 points over the past month, although he struggles defensively. With free agency approaching, he could be a target for teams like the Yankees looking for offensive support behind the plate.

Jonah Heim has stepped up as a starter for the Athletics following Langeliers' injury, but the struggling Oakland team could still consider trading him while he is still under contract, particularly given his prior postseason experience.

The St. Louis Cardinals are in a strong position as they have three catchers on their Major League roster ready to be traded, along with two promising prospects. This provides them with leverage in negotiations.

The New York Mets could be another player in the catching market, with Francisco Alvarez and Luis Torrens both possible trade pieces. They might demand significant returns, reflecting the overall sentiment that the catcher market doesn’t offer many overwhelming options, making trades challenging. As one AL executive noted, teams must weigh whether they are improving their situation or simply swapping players without an upgrade.
