Southern Brave Overcome Phoenix to Move Up the Table

In The Hundred 2026, Southern Brave achieved their first victory of the season by defeating Birmingham Phoenix by 12 runs at the Utilita Bowl. This win allowed them to move off the bottom of the table.

Batting first, Southern Brave scored 128 runs, losing 8 wickets in their allotted 100 balls. Marcus Stoinis led the scoring for Brave with 34 runs off 26 balls. Other contributions came from Ben McKinney (18), Tom Abell (22), and David Miller (24). Brave faced a difficult middle portion as they lost four wickets for just 12 runs, but Luke Wood added a quick 10 runs in the tailend to help secure a total of 128.

Birmingham Phoenix, requiring 129 runs for victory, fell short by scoring 116 runs for the loss of 9 wickets. Will Smeed top-scored for the Phoenix, making 35 runs off 28 balls before being dismissed by Wood, who ended up with figures of 3-24. Marcus Stoinis also made an impact with the ball, taking 2-16.

The match was highlighted by three wickets taken by Luke Wood off consecutive deliveries in the final set of overs, including crucial dismissals of Ben Dwarshuis and Scott Currie, followed by Saqib Mahmood being run out, which effectively sealed the game in favor of the Brave.

Following this victory, Southern Brave climbed to seventh place in the standings based on net run rate, overtaking Birmingham Phoenix, who now sit at the bottom of the table.
