Sports Commune terminated as Jaffna Kings owners

The franchise agreement between Innovative Production Group (IPG), the rights holder for the Lanka Premier League, and Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) was officially terminated with Sports Commune, stripping them of ownership of the Jaffna Kings. This decision came in the wake of co-owner Manjot Kalra's arrest and the subsequent collapse of the franchise's financial structure. IPG stated, "The termination follows the franchisee's inability to fulfil its financial obligations under the terms of the franchise agreement," and that all rights relating to the Jaffna Kings have reverted to IPG.

IPG and SLC have taken over all operational responsibilities, including player, coaching, and support-staff contracts. This action was necessary to stabilize the franchise after Sports Commune failed to disburse sponsorship funds, which led to players covering sponsor logos with black tape during their match on July 22. Since then, emergency funds were released to address approximately 90% of outstanding player and staff salaries, with IPG committing to settle the remaining amounts by the contractual deadlines.

IPG confirmed that the sixth edition of the LPL will proceed as scheduled with the Jaffna Kings continuing to participate in the tournament under the same name, and no changes will be made to the squad, tournament format, or match schedule. The franchise’s issues arose from a commercial framework that required sponsors to pay the owners directly, who then were responsible for salary distribution. This system broke down following Kalra's arrest for corruption, with him remaining in judicial custody until July 31. Reports also indicate that the co-owner, Mayank Goel, has been unreachable after reportedly arriving in Sri Lanka recently.

Anil Mohan, CEO of IPG, emphasized the importance of protecting the integrity of the Lanka Premier League and ensuring stability for players, coaches, partners, and fans. He reassured stakeholders that all operational matters concerning contracts and logistics are being managed properly. The sixth edition of the LPL is on track to be a successful tournament.
