The Blaze defeats Durham by 10 wickets in T20 Blast

In the T20 Blast final, Tammy Beaumont played a pivotal role as The Blaze overwhelmed Durham, winning by 10 wickets at The Oval. Beaumont, who recently retired from international cricket, scored 54 runs while forming an unbroken opening partnership of 118 with Sarah Bryce, who contributed an unbeaten 53, marking her first half-century of the tournament.

Having already triumphed against Surrey in the semi-final, Kirstie Gordon's side remained in control against a Durham team that previously secured a surprise victory over Hampshire Hawks. Batting first, Durham struggled, losing captain Hollie Armitage on the fourth ball to left-arm bowler Grace Ballinger, and they never managed to recover from the slow pitch that challenged their scoring ability against The Blaze’s bowlers.

Australian all-rounder Heather Graham provided some resistance with a 30-run performance but her wicket was significant. Despite contributions of 20 runs each from Grace Thompson and Emily Windsor, Durham finished their innings at 117 for 8, a total widely considered underwhelming.

Charli Knott, the tournament’s leading wicket-taker, recorded 2 wickets for 25 runs while Gordon took 3 for 21, though fielding errors were evident with five catches dropped—yet these mistakes did not prove disastrous. As The Blaze began their innings, Lauren Filer opened with two wides in her first three balls, while Beaumont and Bryce completed the chase without any mishaps.

The Blaze showcased their experience in navigating the demanding south London conditions, leading to two solid wins on the day. Knott made a name for herself in this short format, finishing with six wickets throughout the final day alone, and being named player of the tournament with her 404 runs and 27 wickets.

Skipper Gordon’s leadership was instrumental, as she exerted pressure on Durham, taking three wickets in the process, while Ballinger excelled with four wickets across both matches. Beaumont illustrated her form with a 29-run innings against Surrey earlier in the day before her standout performance with seven boundaries.

The Blaze's dominance left another England international, Georgia Elwiss, without a single delivery faced, and Scotland's Kathryn Bryce was not needed to add to her semi-final total of 34. The Nottingham-based team exhibited such strength in both fixtures that they are likely to be strong contenders in the next tournament cycle.

On the other hand, Durham’s batting inefficiency was glaring, as their reliance on a few key players, including their captain and Graham, proved inadequate. While Graham had solid contributions in both games, the lack of depth in batting hampered their competitiveness against The Blaze. After a poor previous season where they won only five matches, Durham aimed to build on this performance for next season.
