Tuchel defiant after England's World Cup exit: 'I have no regrets'

England head coach Thomas Tuchel maintained his stance against engaging in any “blame game” following the team’s semi-final loss to Argentina in the World Cup. In the lead-up to the third-place playoff against France, Tuchel expressed a desire to close the gap with top nations, despite facing criticism from various quarters, including US President Donald Trump, who questioned Tuchel's tactical decisions during the match.
Tuchel insisted he would not dwell on the defeat, stating, "I have the right to not engage" in discussions of blame. He noted that while other countries like France, Spain, and Argentina have expectations of winning at this level, England is still working towards reaching that standard.
The comments from Tuchel arose just ahead of the third-place match scheduled for Miami, which he acknowledged was considered by many as a less desirable matchup. Amidst criticisms of his strategic choices, particularly regarding Harry Kane's role in the match, Tuchel reflected on his decisions saying, “I took a decision, trusting my instinct, my intuition, my experience.” He affirmed that he would only regret any lack of reaction from the team, not the decision itself.
In response to Trump's remarks that Kane should not have been placed in a defensive position, Tuchel played down the controversy, emphasizing that the players were simply following tactical instructions. He stated, “We defended in a deep block. That’s what you do if you defend in a block.” Tuchel underscored the collective effort of the team, asserting that their developed teamwork and mentality over the past weeks should not be questioned.
As they prepared for the impending match against France, players like John Stones expressed the emotional toll of the semi-final defeat, admitting it was difficult to process the loss. Stones highlighted the personal nature of such experiences, noting the team's aspirations and belief they could win, which made the exit in the semi-final all the more painful.
The final training session for the England squad took place in Kansas City, and their travel to Miami was delayed due to thunderstorms. Earlier, some players, including Jude Bellingham and Jordan Henderson, were seen enjoying leisure time with a barbecue after the intense match.
