Ben Stokes leads Durham to victory and promotion hopes

Ben Stokes starred as Durham boosted their Rothesay County Championship promotion hopes with a commanding 338-run victory over Derbyshire, achieving the win with a day to spare. The former England captain contributed significantly, following his half-century and two wickets in the first innings with an unbeaten 66 and a remarkable five wickets for 17 runs as Derbyshire was bowled out for just 84, while attempting to chase an improbable target of 423 runs for victory.
After resuming their first innings at 127 for six, trailing by 156 runs, Derbyshire was dismissed for 156, with Durham's Matthew Potts achieving figures of five for 46. Opening batsman Ben McKinney of Durham played a pivotal role, scoring a brilliant 140 off 162 balls, and Will Rhodes added 52 runs. Stokes' quick-fire 66 not out came from just 55 deliveries, leading to a declaration at 295 for six.
Stokes then took three wickets in four balls in the second innings, while Potts again impressed with three wickets for 22 runs.
In another match, Division One leaders Nottinghamshire secured a 145-run win against Surrey at The Oval, despite Ollie Pope's commendable score of 111 for the hosts, who were bowled out for 183 in their second innings. Nottinghamshire's Olly Stone and Dillon Pennington combined to take seven wickets, with the visitors scoring 306 all out after resuming their innings at 147 for three.
Furthermore, Warwickshire achieved a thrilling one-wicket victory against Sussex at Edgbaston, climbing to second place in Division One. Chris Woakes struck the winning boundary after Warwickshire had slipped from 149 for three to 202 for nine in their pursuit of 203 runs, following Sussex's 207 in their second innings.
Elsewhere, Essex batter Charlie Allison notched 105 not out at Taunton, propelling his side to 314 for three against Somerset after having followed on, leading by three runs with seven wickets in hand. In Cheltenham, Gloucestershire's Ollie Price (63 not out) and James Bracey (45 not out) led their team to a total of 248 for three against Worcestershire, gaining a 131-run advantage with seven wickets in hand. Notable performances also included Northamptonshire opener Ricardo Vasconcelos, who scored 100 at Old Trafford against Lancashire, as the visitors declared on 298 for four and left Lancashire needing 422 runs for victory.
