The Carolina Hurricanes found themselves just one win away from capturing the Stanley Cup after a decisive 4-2 victory over the Vegas Golden Knights. This game, played on June 11, 2026, marked a turning point in the series, as Andrei Svechnikov scored two goals and Sebastian Aho contributed another, helping the Hurricanes reclaim the lead in the best-of-seven series with a 3-2 advantage.
Throughout the NHL playoffs, the Hurricanes had been searching for their power play to come alive while top performers like Svechnikov and Aho had faced challenges. The first four games of the Stanley Cup Final had seen the Hurricanes outperformed in crucial second-period moments. However, Thursday night signaled a shift, as the team’s energy and execution aligned perfectly, leading to the victory.
"I liked our effort for sure, and I hope we're getting better," said coach Rod Brind'Amour. He acknowledged that while the team's game was improving, there was still room for growth to secure the championship.
Captain Jordan Staal continued his impressive run, scoring in his fifth consecutive game of the series after the Golden Knights initially took a 1-0 lead in the first period. Goalkeeper Brandon Bussi made 23 saves in his second postseason start, demonstrating solid performance between the pipes.
Aho's goal in the second period marked a personal milestone as it was his first of the series. He scored following a setup from Sean Walker, who won a puck battle to assist Aho cutting toward the net. Svechnikov's contributions were critical, as he netted two power-play goals; his first came when he shot the puck past goaltender Carter Hart, bringing the score to 2-1, followed by his second which was a close shot off a crisp pass from Nikolaj Ehlers that pushed the lead to 4-1.
Ehlers also had a productive night with three assists and faced two delay-of-game penalties for putting the puck over the glass. The Hurricanes' second-period scoring was crucial, especially given that the Golden Knights had previously outscored Carolina 9-1 in the series' second periods.
Despite the Golden Knights' attempts to battle back, Bussi held firm to secure the lead as the game went on. "It required everything we have," Staal stated during the ESPN broadcast. The Hurricanes will now head into Game 6 on Sunday night in Las Vegas, aiming for their first Stanley Cup since Brind'Amour led them to victory back in 2006.
