In their opening match of the 2026 World Cup on Sunday, June 14, in Dallas, the Netherlands failed to secure a win, drawing 2-2 against Japan. The Dutch team led for a significant portion of the second half, with goals from Virgil Van Dijk in the 51st minute and Crysencio Summerville in the 64th minute. However, Japan equalized twice, first through Keito Nakamura in the 57th minute and then Daichi Kamada in the 89th minute, leaving both teams with one point in Group F.
Initially, the Netherlands struggled with doubts after a disappointing preparation leading up to the World Cup, having lost to Algeria (1-0) and narrowly defeated Uzbekistan (2-1). Memphis Depay, their offensive leader, started on the bench coming back from injury, entering the match on the 70th minute.
In the early moments of the match, Donyell Malen, filling in for Depay, created an opportunity as he spun around in the Japanese box and unleashed a powerful shot, which was saved by goalkeeper Zion Suzuki. The first half ended with limited chances, although the Dutch maintained possession without posing a significant threat to the Japanese defense.
As the second half commenced, both teams adjusted their strategies for a more dynamic game. Van Dijk scored from a well-placed header on a free kick assisted by his teammate Ryan Gravenberch. Shortly thereafter, Nakamura responded with a shot that found the back of the net, only for Summerville to restore the Dutch lead.
Despite a notable save by Suzuki from a shot by Cody Gakpo, Japan managed to equalize late in the match. Kamada’s equalizer, a header that deflected off teammate Koki Ogawa, capped the thrilling contest, as the blues, who reached the Round of 16 in Qatar, looked to secure their qualification in the upcoming matches.
The Netherlands faces Sweden next on Saturday, hoping to bounce back and reach at least the final four of the competition, a stage they have not reached since 2014.
