Piastri: Verstappen's Exit Would Hurt F1

In a recent statement, McLaren driver Oscar Piastri expressed his concerns regarding the potential departure of Max Verstappen from Formula 1, labeling it as "not a great look" for the sport. Verstappen, a four-time world champion, has openly shared his dissatisfaction with the current state of F1, particularly following the recent changes to engine regulations that have left him feeling discontented.

At just 28 years old, Verstappen has established himself as one of the most formidable competitors in the sport, having secured four consecutive drivers' titles from 2021 to 2024. However, after a challenging start to the season, where his best finish has been sixth place, he is reportedly contemplating his future in F1. The upcoming Miami Grand Prix, scheduled for May 1-3, will see the introduction of several rule changes aimed at addressing the concerns raised by drivers regarding the new engine regulations.

Piastri, alongside his teammate and reigning champion Lando Norris, hopes that these adjustments will encourage top drivers like Verstappen to remain in the sport. "It would be a shame for the sport to lose Max, especially at this point in his career," Piastri stated. He emphasized the significance of competing against the best drivers, noting that Verstappen has consistently set the benchmark in recent years.

"Max has shown his calibre in the last 10 years, and especially in the last five or six, he’s been the benchmark," Piastri added. The Australian driver believes that losing Verstappen would not only diminish the competitive landscape of F1 but also negatively impact the sport's image.

Verstappen's record includes the most wins in a single season, and he has hinted at a possible transition to sports car racing, having recently participated in an event at the Nurburgring. His teammate Norris acknowledged Verstappen's achievements, stating, "Max has earned the right to go and do whatever he wants. He’s won four World Championships, and he’s always been that guy."

Norris further remarked on the competitive spirit that Verstappen brings to the track, saying, "It would be a shame for us because, as much as he makes our lives incredibly tough at times, he’s always good fun to race against. It’s always cool to race against someone that’s won four World Championships. It would be a loss for the sport."

As the F1 community awaits the upcoming race, both Piastri and Norris remain hopeful that Verstappen will choose to stay and continue competing at the highest level.
