Foden's Two Assists Keep City Title Hopes Alive

Phil Foden's impressive assist performance was pivotal for Manchester City in their ongoing Premier League title challenge. The 25-year-old contributed two assists during a comfortable 3-0 victory over Crystal Palace on Wednesday evening, helping to keep Pep Guardiola's side within two points of league leaders Arsenal as the season nears its conclusion.

Prior to Foden's dazzling backheel assist for Antoine Semenyo's opening goal, City had shown signs of disarray, stemming from Guardiola's decision to introduce six changes to the starting line-up. This strategy was necessitated by the approaching FA Cup final, causing Guardiola to rest stars like Erling Haaland and Rayan Cherki. This change followed earlier season troubles caused by making ten changes in a Champions League defeat to Bayer Leverkusen.

As City prepared for their upcoming clash against Chelsea, Foden's performance against Palace may have secured him a spot at Wembley. Foden expressed thoughts on his assist, stating, "I checked a few times before receiving the ball and I saw Ant [Semenyo] make a good movement. It is one of those, sometimes it doesn’t come off. Sometimes a risk is worth taking and I am very delighted it came off and we scored from it. Buzzing to contribute to a goal and help the lads get three points which is the most important."

Former England midfielder Jamie Redknapp dubbed it the "assist of the season," while ex-City defender Micah Richards showered praise on Sky Sports: "The little backheel is sensational. I want him to do so well because he comes from the academy. It means more. To produce this from the academy, his vision and to execute that pass is mesmerising to me."

Foden has netted ten goals in 48 appearances this season, with his last goal coming on December 14 against Palace. He acknowledged a challenging stretch, stating, "I would say I had a good half season - the first half - and dropped off a bit then struggled to find my place in the team. It happens when you have quality players around you and they are more at it than you."

Foden demonstrated his capabilities throughout the match against Palace, notably providing two assists for the first time since December 2023 and creating five chances within the first half, the most of any player this season during that timeframe. He received a standing ovation upon being substituted in the 82nd minute, and was crowned man of the match.

Guardiola remarked on Foden's importance, saying, "These types of games, the quality makes the difference and Phil is full of it in his body. I am beyond happy and satisfied. It has to be a big role in the future. We want the best for Phil and Phil has to deliver what he has done for many, many years."

As City eyes the World Cup, Foden's place remains uncertain, with coach Thomas Tuchel indicating competition for spots. Richards noted Foden's potential to unlock defenses, stating, "He [Foden] is the one that can unlock the goal. If I was picking the squad he would 100% be in."

With two games remaining for Arsenal and a final day clash on May 24 for City, Guardiola acknowledged the challenge ahead, saying, "Depends on them [Arsenal]. If they win two games, nothing to do, nothing to talk. All we can be is in there just in case."
