McIlroy: LIV Players Returning Would Be 'Good Business' for PGA Tour

Rory McIlroy stated that bringing back players who defected to LIV Golf would be "good business" for the PGA Tour, amid uncertainty over the future of the breakaway series. Recently, Saudi Arabia's Public Investment Fund (PIF) announced it will end its multibillion-dollar support at the year's close. In response, LIV unveiled a "strategic evolution," including an independent board, as it seeks new financial investors.

McIlroy, a vocal critic of LIV, expressed skepticism about its ability to secure new funding, noting, "When one of the wealthiest sovereign wealth funds in the world thinks that you’re too expensive for them, that sort of says something."

Earlier, Bryson DeChambeau remarked that he would focus on growing his YouTube channel and would only participate in tournaments that show interest in him if LIV does not continue. McIlroy emphasized that it is ultimately a matter of whether players choose to return to the PGA Tour, mentioning recent statements by other players that indicate the decision hinges on LIV's fate.

He acknowledged PGA Tour chief executive Brian Rolapp's belief that strengthening the tour and the DP World Tour is essential. "That’s just good business practice," McIlroy asserted.

As a six-time major champion, McIlroy had previously shared his views on LIV, indicating that he does not need to reiterate his stance. He mentioned that while LIV's existence might not be in jeopardy, as they aim to find alternative investments, he remains committed to the PGA Tour as the best competitive avenue for golfers.

McIlroy also reflected on his past judgment of players who joined LIV, admitting he may not have considered their perspectives fully. Regardless, he stated he would not judge anyone for their choices regarding tour participation.

He suggested that if players consider competing in the DP World Tour instead, it could enhance that tour. "That would make the DP World Tour stronger, and I would be delighted with that, because that’s my home tour, at the end of the day," he shared.

McIlroy concluded by reinforcing that for those wanting to be the best golfers they can be, the PGA Tour is the definitive option, adding that opting out reflects certain attitudes.
