Broos Discusses 3-5-2 Strategy After Mexico Loss

Bafana Bafana head coach Hugo Broos arrived at the 2026 FIFA World Cup with a plan. Despite suffering a 2-0 defeat to Mexico, he left the press conference room without any intention of apologising for the outcome. Before the match, Broos attracted attention by opting for an unconventional 3-5-2 formation, marking a bold tactical choice for a team returning to the World Cup stage after 16 years.

Addressing questions post-match, Broos remained unfazed by the criticisms. "I think when you saw the game, you would know why I did that," he said confidently during the press conference at the Azteca Stadium in Mexico City. He noted that apart from the opening 15 minutes, which were dominated by Mexico’s high press, his team managed to maintain balance in the game. "They then became desperate, not knowing what to do with the ball. The two defenders just had the ball at their feet with not much solution," he added.

Broos explained that his tactical decision was based on the game dynamics at play. With the loss, Bafana Bafana will also proceed without Sphephelo Sithole and Themba Zwane in their next match against Czechia in Atlanta, United States of America, as both players received straight red cards during the match against Mexico.
