George Russell of Mercedes won a tense battle against Max Verstappen of Red Bull Racing at the Austrian Grand Prix held at the Red Bull Ring. Russell held the lead during the final laps of the race as he was slowly being caught by Verstappen, while his team-mate Kimi Antonelli chased the Dutch driver. This victory marked Russell's first since the season opener in Australia, moving him up to second place in the championship standings, narrowing the gap to Antonelli to 40 points.
On the last lap, Antonelli managed to close in on Verstappen, but the four-time world champion secured his best result of the season with a solid second place finish. Verstappen's performance indicated an improvement in form after Red Bull introduced significant upgrades to their car ahead of their home race. Oscar Piastri from McLaren finished a respectable fourth, while Lewis Hamilton's attempt to compete for second place early in the race diminished due to what was deemed a confusing strategy from Ferrari, leaving him in fifth.
Key highlights from the race included:
* Russell's gradual return to the victory lane following a strong weekend.
* Red Bull's resurgence despite Verstappen's earlier crash during qualifying.
* Ferrari's decline after a promising start.
Russell, who took pole position on Saturday, began the race strongly, maintaining his lead initially over Hamilton, who grappled with Verstappen for position throughout the early stages. Hamilton attempted an early pit stop for fresh tires, which proved disadvantageous, sealing his fate as a contender for the race. Russell and Verstappen opted to pit later, aiming to optimize their strategies.
Antonelli had dropped to fifth position early in the race after a chaotic series of interactions with Hamilton, Verstappen, and Ferrari's Charles Leclerc but capitalized on a teammate's decision to pit ahead of a virtual safety car. After the safety car period, Russell led with Verstappen trailing by about five seconds, while Antonelli closed the gap further.
The latter part of the race saw Verstappen reducing the gap to Russell to just 1.3 seconds as Russell made another pit stop at lap 43. Verstappen managed to extend his stint, aiming for a potential tire advantage. Thus, the final moments of the race were charged with excitement as Russell, Verstappen, and Antonelli crossed the finish line nearly simultaneously, with Russell maintaining a lead of just 1.6 seconds over Verstappen, and Antonelli finishing only 0.3 seconds behind.
Russell reflected on the race, saying, "The tough races definitely test you psychologically. These last two weekends for me have been vitally important to remind myself I can do it."
Ferrari's weekend was less favorable. Hamilton initially looked to vie for a podium but felt his strategy disrupted by the team's calls to pit under the safety car. The race turned problematic for him as he battled with grip and balance issues, ultimately leading to a disappointing outcome for the team, especially after their prior success in Spain.
The McLaren team benefited from this situation, with Piastri claiming fourth and Hamilton finishing fifth. Isack Hadjar put on an impressive display to secure sixth for Red Bull, ahead of Lando Norris. Leclerc rounded out the top eight for Ferrari, with Racing Bulls drivers Liam Lawson and Arvid Lindblad completing the points-scoring positions.
The next race in the Formula 1 season will be the British Grand Prix at Silverstone, scheduled to take place from July 3 to July 5.
