Thomas Tuchel stresses defensive improvements for England

Thomas Tuchel believed England received a wake-up call from their match against Croatia and emphasized the necessity to enhance their defensive structure as the World Cup progressed. England had the opportunity to qualify for the knockout stages from Group L with a game to spare if they managed to defeat Ghana in Boston on Tuesday night. They would also top the group if Panama failed to overcome Croatia in a later game, but Tuchel remained cautious about not taking anything for granted.
The head coach criticized his team for falling back too quickly during the first half of the 4-2 victory over Croatia. In a detailed analysis of the chaotic opening period, Tuchel noted that the shape was incorrect before Croatia scored their second equalizer just before halftime.
"We need to do things better," Tuchel remarked. "Defensively we dropped a little too deep from a middle block into a low block, which itself is not a problem, but we went a bit too early. We were too man-to-man focused and didn’t rely enough on our structure to be able to push out again."
He candidly expressed that the back seven formation they adopted was uncharacteristic of their play style. "Maybe it is good that we conceded, because it just tells us: ‘Let’s not do this again.’ It makes no sense, it’s not us, it doesn’t play to our strengths."
Tuchel also highlighted the need for better management of ball wins during possession: "We had too many easy ball losses after winning possession; we exerted significant effort to win the ball, only to return it straight away. We need to improve our structure with the ball to effectively defend against counterattacks before they become dangerous."
Following their impressive second half against Croatia, Tuchel noted the importance of maintaining high standards. "That is a tricky part, to keep the level up," he stated. "But first of all, I am very happy because we found an answer to adversity. We saw the physical input and the chances created, but we still have aspects to improve."
Tuchel expressed enthusiasm for his players' attitude before facing Ghana: "They keep themselves on edge. The players who didn’t get the minutes at the beginning are pushing. That is why I love the team; at the moment, I see no signs of complacency."
In preparation for the match against Ghana, which had beaten Panama 1-0 in their opening game, England aimed to make minimal changes to their lineup. Declan Rice trained following discomfort during the match against Croatia, while Bukayo Saka had trained fully, though he was likely to start on the bench. Tuchel was contemplating potential changes to his back four, considering Marc Guéhi's bid for a starting position in central defense.
England arrived in Boston under less than ideal weather conditions, as heavy rain was expected. Tuchel voiced his discontent regarding hydration breaks, stating they disrupted the flow of the match. "They interrupt and change the identity of a football match more than I thought they would," he said, expressing a preference for the game to flow without interruptions.
