Evenepoel wins Stage 16, Lipowitz crashes out

During the Tour de France 2026, Remco Evenepoel claimed victory in the Stage 16 time trial, held between Évian and Thonon-les-Bains. The event saw Evenepoel power along the course with Lake Geneva in the backdrop, finishing in a time of 32 minutes and 19 seconds. His performance marked a remarkable milestone, as he won back-to-back stages.

In contrast, the race took a serious turn when Lipowitz crashed out. Initially strong, Lipowitz suffered a fall on a bend, with his wheel sliding out and resulting in a hard impact on his shoulder, during which he possibly hit his head. He was subsequently taken away in an ambulance, and his involvement in the race concluded prematurely.

As the race progressed, Mattias Skjelmose briefly took the lead before Evenepoel’s decisive time trial performance pushed him back again. Evenepoel’s victory moved him to within 4 minutes and 32 seconds of the yellow jersey, held by Tadej Pogacar. Pogacar, who finished the stage 28 seconds slower than Evenepoel, remained in second place overall.

The stage greatly influenced the green jersey standings as well. Evenepoel entered the top ten standings with his stage win, while riders like Isaac Del Toro and Tadej Pogacar also gained positions. The standings showed Mads Pedersen of Lidl-Trek leading with 417 points followed by Jasper Philipsen and Biniam Girmay.

In the mountains classification, Pogacar added to his tally, securing three points and extending his lead atop the standings. He currently holds 67 points, leading Valentin Paret-Peintre and Richard Carapaz.

Following Stage 16, the general classification saw Pogacar in first place with a time of 56 hours, 14 minutes, and 18 seconds, while Evenepoel's time left him in second place. Other notable competitors included Isaac Del Toro and Paul Seixas.

As the event continued, anticipation built around the forthcoming stages, with riders looking to capitalize on their performances and climb the rankings as the Tour de France 2026 moved into its final phases.
