The Spanish National Team by Autonomous Communities
Newsroom

The Spanish national football team is comprised of players from various autonomous communities across Spain, each contributing to the team's quest for success in the World Cup. With the 2026 World Cup approaching, fans are keen to understand where these players hail from and which regions contribute the most to 'La Roja.'
When examining the roster of 26 players, it is evident that Catalonia stands out, providing the largest representation. Nine players from Catalonia are part of Luis de la Fuente's squad, making it the region contributing the most athletes to the national team. The two goalkeepers representing Catalonia are David Raya from Barcelona and Joan García from Sallent, neither of whom has played yet. Eric García from Martorell has also not seen any minutes, while Pau Cubarsí from Terrassa and Marc Cucurella from Alella have already participated in matches. Completing the defensive line is Marc Pubill from Terrassa, who has made his debut.
Additional Catalan players include Dani Olmo from Tarrassa, Víctor Muñoz from Barcelona, and Lamine Yamal from Esplugues de Llobregat, making a total of nine players from this region.
Following Catalonia, Andalucía and the Basque Country are tied for second place in terms of player contributions, each sending three players to bolster the national squad. From Andalucía, Fabián Ruíz from Los Palacios y Villafranca and Álex Baena from Roquetas de Mar are seeing significant playing time. Gavi, also from the same town as Fabián, has made a more limited contribution. It is noteworthy that two players hailing from the same locality could potentially become World Champions, a unique aspect of Spanish football.
Similarly, the Basque Country has sent three players, with Unai Simón from Vitoria-Gasteiz and Mikel Oyarzabal from Éibar being more actively involved in matches. Martín Zubimendi from San Sebastián, however, has yet to play.
Madrid, Navarra, the Canary Islands, and the Valencian Community each contribute two players as well. The Community of Madrid is represented by Rodri and Marcos Llorente, both key players in the tournament thus far. Navarra is represented by Mikel Merino and Nico Williams, with the latter facing injury troubles but expected to be ready for the final. The Canary Islands contribute Yeremy Pino from Las Palmas de Gran Canaria and Pedri from Tenerife, both filling different roles within the squad. The Community Valenciana also provides two players, Ferran Torres from Foios and Alejandro Grimaldo from La Pobla de Vallbona, with both having essential roles despite varied levels of playtime.
Representing Extremadura is Pedro Porro from Don Benito, who has shown remarkable performances in the tournament. Galician representation is in the form of Borja Iglesias from Santiago de Compostela, who made a debut in which he played for a couple of minutes.
Beyond Spain's borders, Aymeric Laporte makes his mark on the team. He was born in Agen and has Basque ancestry, choosing to defend Spain's colors with an outstanding commitment, having made significant contributions throughout the World Cup.
