As the 2026 NFL season approaches, early predictions emerge regarding which teams will dominate the AFC South. Following several preseason games, there is a notable confidence in two prospects for betting in this division.
The Houston Texans appear primed to finish atop the AFC South. The Texans' defense recorded the best statistics in the league, ranking first in average yards allowed per game and second in points permitted. Additionally, they secured the seventh position in sack rate while coming in second in defensive DVOA. Impressively, they generated 30% of their pressures with only a four-man rush and yielded under two yards per play when under pressure, indicating a dominant defensive performance. The outlook for 2026 appears bright for this elite defense, which retains almost all its key players and recently upgraded with additional defensive talent through the draft.
Head coach DeMeco Ryans has led the Texans for three seasons, boasting a record of 32-19, guiding the team to division titles in 2023 and 2024, and narrowly missing out on another title in 2025. His teams are characterized by discipline, toughness, and physical play, attributes that make them compelling contenders.
The Texans' offense, however, raises questions, particularly concerning quarterback C.J. Stroud. The 2025 season saw a lackluster performance offensively, with the team ranking in the middle tier for total yards but struggling significantly on third and fourth down conversions, coupled with a rushing average of only 3.9 yards per carry, ranking 29th in the league. Stroud's performance fluctuated throughout the season and concluded with a disappointing performance during the postseason loss against the New England Patriots.
To address these issues, the Texans targeted improvements to their offensive line in both free agency and the draft. New running back David Montgomery joins a healthier receiving corps as the season kicks off. The success of Houston's offense largely hinges on Stroud’s development. Given his past performances, including flashes of brilliance reminiscent of his rookie year in 2023, there is belief in his potential. Retaining the same offensive coordinator, Nick Caley, provides a sense of continuity that should facilitate Stroud's performance.
The Texans will face competition from the Jacksonville Jaguars, although the Jaguars are burdened by a more challenging schedule stemming from their first-place finishes. The Texans' roster seems stronger, and there is less concern regarding the Indianapolis Colts, who face uncertainty with quarterback Daniel Jones returning from injury. The Tennessee Titans, on the other hand, face significant challenges and are not expected to be competitive in the division.
Selected Picks: Texans to Win AFC South (+110).
Turning to the Titans, news reveals concerns about quarterback Cam Ward's performance in training camp, with reports indicating he has faced difficulties. The Tennessee offense did not impress in their initial preseason game, and joint practices have further highlighted issues with efficiency in the new offensive system. Nonetheless, optimism remains around the running game and the potential impact of draft pick Carnell Tate.
With Robert Salah now leading the Titans' defense, expectations for improvement exist, but doubts linger regarding the overall talent of the unit. A review of the Titans' schedule emphasizes the challenge, with few winnable contests evident. Prospective game wins against the Jets, Browns, and Raiders are among the limited opportunities. The consensus suggests the Titans will struggle to secure more than six wins this season, leading to the recommendation of a tactful approach toward betting on their win total.
Selected Picks: Titans Under 6.5 Wins (-115).
