GB team faces inexperienced challenge in Davis Cup Finals

Cameron Norrie missed Great Britain's Davis Cup tie against Ecuador on 19-20 September 2026, crucial for qualification to November's eight-team finals. Norrie, the British number two, experienced arm pain during practice and was substituted by world number 95 Toby Samuel. Davis Cup captain Leon Smith stated, "He wasn’t able to accelerate on the ball like he wanted to." Although the issue isn’t serious, a decision was made to ensure his fitness for the remainder of the year.

Great Britain had not reached the knockout stage since 2023 and entered the match with a lack of experience. Jack Draper had concluded his challenging season early, while Jan Choinski and Jacob Fearnley were sidelined due to injuries. Samuel made his Davis Cup debut against Ecuador’s Andres Andrade, with British number one Arthur Fery set to compete against Alvaro Guillen Meza.

Ecuador's singles players were outside the top 200 in rankings, while Fery’s previous experience for the country was limited to one appearance in Poland the prior September. When asked about the team’s inexperience, Smith remarked, "I’m not sure it concerns me, but it is obviously a factor. ... you want them to experience this. You have to start somewhere and I have a lot of confidence in Arthur, Toby, and our doubles team."

British number seven Harry Wendelken, currently ranking 175, was present at the Copper Box as a practice partner and was included in the team for Norrie's absence. On Sunday, world number one Henry Patten paired with US Open champion Neal Skupski for the doubles match, preceding two reverse singles.

Fery, having played at Wimbledon’s Centre Court in a men’s singles semi-final in July, played for Great Britain as the country’s number one for the first time. Despite an early exit in the US Open round, Fery reached the Winston-Salem final before the Grand Slam. "I’m aware of the role I have as the number one player and I am representing my country... but I’ve dealt well under pressure this year," Fery stated. "If I want top 20 or top 10, I must take this responsibility. I’m ready to represent my country."

Great Britain defeated Norway 4-0 in February's qualifying round and aimed to reach the quarter-finals for the first time since 2023. Ecuador, previously underdogs, had defeated Australia significantly in February and had a historic victory over a British team with Tim Henman and Greg Rusedski in July 2000.

The winners of the weekend's qualifying ties will join Italy in the final eight stage in Bologna, scheduled from 24 to 29 November. Smith expressed confidence, stating, "We have a good opportunity. It’s never straightforward despite rankings - just ask Australia." He emphasized, "We have a good team, and we’d be thrilled to get to the finals."
