Saracens face fines due to Venter's media absences

Brendan Venter's position as director of rugby for Saracens resulted in the club potentially facing fines from Premiership Rugby due to his failure to meet media commitments. On 29 September 2026, it was reported that Saracens had already incurred a £5,000 penalty after Venter did not attend the league’s pre-season launch day. Additionally, Venter failed to engage with the media during or after the opening-match victory against Leicester.

Reports surfaced in the Daily Telegraph that Venter, who was reappointed as director of rugby in January, "resigned" from his role last month, taking on a new position as "head of rugby culture and wine consultant." It has been noted that head coach Joe Shaw was assigned to manage media engagements. Saracens allegedly sought approval in July for Shaw to handle the club's media responsibilities, but the club and Premiership Rugby have yet to confirm these developments.

Despite Venter's new job title, it has been suggested that he remains bound by his contractual media obligations. Venter returned to Saracens as director of rugby after succeeding Mark McCall, who left the role following a successful 15-year tenure. This is not the first instance of Venter’s clashes with media obligations; during his initial time with the club, which began in 2009, he faced issues with the authorities over similar concerns. For example, in September 2010, Saracens issued an apology to European Rugby Cup (ERC) officials when former captain Steve Borthwick did not attend the Heineken Cup launch event. Borthwick had been instructed to prioritize a bonding session at a beer festival in Munich.

Venter himself had previously received a warning from ERC officials in December 2010 for his conduct during a post-match interview following a defeat against Racing Metro, where he provided predominantly unsatisfactory responses. He later explained that his behavior was inspired by the mockumentary film "Mike Bassett: England Manager." Venter's tenure at Saracens as director of rugby ended in the middle of the 2010–11 season when he was succeeded by McCall.
