NLO Cup 2026: Ogunnowo discusses revamped competition

The Nationwide League One (NLO) introduced a revamped cup competition aimed at addressing concerns from clubs over the limited number of matches within its existing league format, according to the Chief Operating Officer, Olushola Ogunnowo. Scheduled to commence on 10 October, the new cup will involve clubs from Divisions One and Two, with teams required to pay a non-refundable registration fee of N1 million.

In an interview with PREMIUM TIMES, Ogunnowo explained that the initiative was implemented to provide additional playing opportunities for clubs of varying financial capabilities, thereby accommodating their needs without imposing extra costs on those with fewer resources. He noted, "As a responsible public body, we have to cater for all parties."

The NLO retains its stadium-based format for both divisions while offering this cup as an alternative for clubs that wish to participate in more matches. "We have modeled a stadium league for Division One and Two in the Nationwide League. We now came up with another competition, a cup competition like we have across Europe, for clubs in both divisions that can afford to play," Ogunnowo said.

Feedback following the announcement of the competition has been favorable, with many clubs expressing satisfaction with the NLO’s initiative. In a circular dated 14 September, the NLO Secretariat outlined the registration requirements and operational guidelines for the restructured competition. Interested clubs are required to pay the stipulated registration fee into the league’s designated account with FCMB while submitting proof of payment for verification.

The competition will be structured in a regional home-and-away format, allowing clubs to propose their preferred home grounds. Clubs facing logistical challenges or those located in proximity to one another may share venues with NLO Secretariat approval to facilitate scheduling. Additionally, teams must submit their proposed home grounds ahead of the competition to assist with zonal allocation and fixture planning.

The NLO aims to enhance player visibility and create prospects for international career development through this competition. All matches will be livestreamed on its official platform, enabling scouts and club representatives worldwide to observe player performances in real time. Three technology partners, FutbalConnect, SofaScore, and Zkyte Technologies, are supporting this initiative. FutbalConnect will connect players with scouts and agencies, SofaScore will provide live scores and performance analytics, and Zkyte Technologies will manage streaming and broadcasting technology.

As part of its strategy to improve player exposure and support talent development, the league has instructed participating clubs to update player rosters and profiles in preparation for digital media registration. Introducing the NLO Cup aligns with the league's objective to expand competitive opportunities within Nigeria's lower-tier football framework while being mindful of the financial dynamics faced by the clubs.
