Wales Prepares for Rugby World Cup in 2027

On 1 October 2026, almost exactly a year before the start of the men’s Rugby World Cup in Australia, Wales outlined its preparations for the tournament. The competition is set to start on 1 October 2027 in Perth, with the opening match featuring Australia against Hong Kong China. Wales is scheduled to play its first match against Zimbabwe in Adelaide on 2 October.
As of now, Wales ranks 11th in the world, with South Africa holding the top position as the reigning champions. The tournament has expanded to include 24 teams, increasing the number of pools from four to six. Automatically qualifying for the tournament are the top 12 teams from the 2023 World Cup—France, New Zealand, Italy, Ireland, South Africa, Scotland, Wales, Fiji, Australia, England, Argentina, and Japan. Additionally, teams such as Georgia, Spain, Romania, Portugal, Tonga, Canada, the United States, Uruguay, Chile, Zimbabwe, Hong Kong China, and Samoa secured their spots through qualifying tournaments.
Wales has the potential to play 12 or 13 matches in three phases before travelling to Australia. They will have home matches in November against Japan, New Zealand, and Australia, followed by a play-off game at Twickenham's Allianz Stadium. In the Six Nations Championship, Wales will face France, Scotland, and Italy away and host England and Ireland in Cardiff.
After wrapping up the 2026-27 domestic season, Wales is expected to convene for summer fitness camps, which previously took place in Poland, Switzerland, and Turkey. The squad will also participate in three or four warm-up matches in the summer, although the Welsh Rugby Union has not yet revealed specific opponents or dates.
In a draw for the World Cup, Wales found itself in Pool F alongside England, Tonga, and Zimbabwe, with matches arranged at three different venues. The match against Zimbabwe will take place in Adelaide, and just six days later, Wales will play Tonga in Melbourne before facing England on 16 October in Sydney.
The knockout phases will feature 16 teams this year, instead of the traditional eight that qualify straight to the quarter-finals. The top two from each pool will advance to the round of 16, along with four of the best third-placed teams. If Wales tops its group, it will face the runner-up from Pool B, which includes South Africa, Italy, Georgia, and Romania. Conversely, if Wales finishes second, it would meet the second-placed team from Pool C, containing Argentina, Fiji, Spain, and Canada.
The Olympic Stadium in Sydney will host the semi-finals and the bronze medal match, culminating in the final scheduled for 13 November 2027.
