England selected uncapped all-rounder James Coles for their T20 series against India. Coles, 22, who has yet to make his international debut, recently achieved a career-best score of 224 not out in a County Championship match against Glamorgan. His performance in the previous T20 Blast season also stood out, accumulating 397 runs at an average of 33, alongside 10 wickets at an economy rate just over nine.
Harry Brook is set to captain the team for the five-match T20 series, despite being passed over for the Test captaincy against New Zealand. The squad does not include Test opener Ben Duckett, who participated in the 2023 T20 World Cup semi-final loss to India.
Coles was bought for £390,000 by London Spirit during the Hundred tournament this year. The squad also sees the returns of Jordan Cox, Sonny Baker, and Saqib Mahmood, while Brydon Carse and Jamie Overton are sidelined due to injuries.
Selector Marcus North commented, "James Coles is an exciting addition and has earned his place. We have selected a larger squad to accommodate for the fact that this series will begin shortly after the Test series against New Zealand is due to conclude, which allows us to be flexible."
The first T20 of the series is scheduled for Chester-le-Street on 1 July, with the concluding match taking place in Southampton on 11 July. England will potentially face emerging 15-year-old talent Vaibhav Sooryavanshi in this series.
