Mariners extend win streak, hit three homers against Mets

Newsroom

SEATTLE -- The Mariners showcased their power hitting in an impressive 8-3 victory over the Mets on Tuesday night, which extended their season-best win streak to eight games. This offensive explosion featured three home runs, bringing the team's total to 21 since their last loss on May 24.

This achievement marks a notable milestone as no team has homered that many times during an eight-game stretch this season, and only three teams accomplished it last year (the Yankees, Cubs, and Angels). Additionally, the Mariners have not experienced a power surge like this since 2019, a season noted for an increase in home runs across Major League Baseball. Before this, the Mariners' last similar streak with this number of homers in so few games was in 1999.

In terms of franchise history, this current stretch of 21 homers over eight games is particularly impressive, as it comes with a winning record, advancing the Mariners to four games above .500 (33-29) for the first time this season. Throughout this winning streak, they have achieved a sweep against the Athletics, the team they passed to take the lead in the American League West, and also triumphed against a National League contender, the D-backs. The team is now positioned to seek another sweep against the Mets, who possess the sport's second-highest payroll.

Julio Rodríguez highlighted the Mariners’ offensive capabilities on Tuesday with a standout solo home run in the sixth inning that soared for 6.6 seconds and traveled a Statcast-projected 396 feet. This marked Rodríguez’s 13th home run of the season, contributing to the best start to a season in his career, putting him on track for a potential fourth All-Star selection.

However, the contributions did not come solely from superstars; Patrick Wisdom, stepping in for first baseman Josh Naylor, and Jhonny Pereda, filling in for Cal Raleigh, were the unsung heroes who made early significant impacts by hitting home runs in the second and fifth innings, respectively. Notably, Wisdom and Pereda became the 10th and 11th different players to hit home runs during this current win streak, showcasing the depth and teamwork within the Mariners' roster.
