The Super Eagles displayed impressive form and fighting spirit despite suffering a narrow 1-2 defeat to World Cup-bound Portugal in a friendly match held in Leiria on June 10, 2026. Prior to the match, the Chairman of the National Sports Commission, Mallam Shehu Dikko, alongside NFF Executive Committee member Sharif Rabiu Inuwa, presented a special framed shirt to midfielder Alexander Iwobi to honor his 100th cap for the Super Eagles.
On the field, Cristiano Ronaldo led the Seleção das Quinas but the Nigerian squad made it clear from the start that they were there to compete. Portugal's Ronaldo missed an opportunity to score in the 9th minute against goalkeeper Maduka Okoye, while at the opposite end, Akor Adams failed to capitalize on a chance, dragging his shot wide.
Portugal took the lead in the 23rd minute when Pedro Neto scored from close range, assisted by Diogo Dalot. Nigeria continued to press, and in the 37th minute, Akor Adams equalized after a well-placed delivery from Fisayo Dele-Bashiru.
The Super Eagles stepped into the second half with renewed vigor. Okoye made a double save from João Félix early on. Ronaldo continued to search for his goal but was unable to connect on a cross in the 50th minute. Coach Éric Chelle made several substitutions by the hour mark, introducing Abdullahi Bewene, Zaidu Sanusi, Terem Moffi, Raphael Onyedika, and Frank Onyeka, which invigorated Nigeria’s efforts.
With 15 minutes remaining, Francisco Çonceicao netted the winning goal for Portugal after maneuvering from the right side. Okoye made an additional save from Félix in the 84th minute, but the Super Eagles ultimately fell short. This loss marked only the second defeat in regulation time for Coach Chelle out of 25 matches during his tenure over the last 15 months.
