Jude Bellingham Invests in Birmingham Cricket Team

In a surprising move, Jude Bellingham, the 22-year-old midfielder for Real Madrid, has acquired a 1.2% stake in the Birmingham Phoenix cricket team. This investment, valued at approximately £800,000 ($1.1 million), reflects Bellingham's desire to contribute to the city where he grew up and to promote the sport of cricket in the region.

Bellingham, who spent his formative years in Stourbridge and attended the Priory School in Edgbaston, expressed his gratitude towards Birmingham, stating, "I love Birmingham. I’m very grateful for what the whole city of Birmingham has done for me." His passion for cricket is evident, and he sees this investment as an opportunity to give back to the community that shaped him.

The Birmingham Phoenix is part of the Hundred franchise, a professional cricket league in the UK that features a unique 100-ball format. Last year, Knighthead Capital Management, the owners of Bellingham’s former club, Birmingham City, purchased a 49% stake in the Phoenix during an auction held by the England and Wales Cricket Board.

With Bellingham's minority investment, Warwickshire County Cricket Club retains majority control with 50.4%, while Knighthead holds 48.4%. Bellingham's involvement is expected to bring a significant boost to the team, similar to the impact that NFL legend Tom Brady has had on Birmingham City.

In addition to his financial investment, Bellingham plans to engage in community projects aimed at encouraging local youth to participate in sports. He remarked, "I was fortunate growing up I had the option of playing cricket and playing football, but some kids don’t have that opportunity. It’s important that if I can get involved in something like this to shine a light on an opportunity for kids, then even better."

Stuart Cain, Chief Executive of Birmingham Phoenix, praised Bellingham's understanding of high-performance sports and his commitment to positively influencing young people's lives through cricket. As Bellingham balances his football career with this new venture, his dedication to promoting sports in Birmingham is sure to inspire the next generation of athletes.
