John Stones close to signing with Inter after World Cup

John Stones was set for a move to Inter Milan after impressing for England at the World Cup. The 32-year-old defender left Manchester City on a free transfer in June. Inter, along with rival Italian club Juventus, had shown interest in Stones prior to the tournament, but the Nerazzurri now appear to be in the lead to acquire him following his standout performances during England's journey to the semi-finals.

Last season, Stones appeared in 13 matches for Manchester City before suffering an injury in December. Upon his return, he played just five more times under then-manager Pep Guardiola. During the World Cup, Stones started in the opening match against Croatia, was an unused substitute against Ghana and Panama, made substitute appearances in the knockout stage victories over the Democratic Republic of the Congo and Mexico, and then started in both the quarter-final win against Norway and in the 2-1 semi-final loss to Argentina.

Towards the end of the previous season, Stones expressed his ambitions to continue playing at the highest level. He noted, "I still feel I have so much to give a club and I feel in a good moment physically. There is a lot for me still to fight for in my career and a new challenge will be exciting. I'm keeping an open mind. I can take what I have learned here and maybe pass it on."

Inter are optimistic about signing Stones, although the deal could fall through if a Premier League club expresses interest. Currently, Arsenal's William Saliba is sidelined with a back injury, creating a need for defensive cover in Mikel Arteta’s squad. Chelsea, now coached by Xabi Alonso, is also looking to sign at least one defender, as they are expected to employ three centre-backs. However, neither Arsenal nor Chelsea have made an official move for Stones yet.
