Relebohile Mofokeng, the recently departed former Orlando Pirates star, opened up about his decision to reject an overseas move last season. The 21-year-old made this revelation following his signing with Belgian side Royale Union Saint-Gilloise after Bafana Bafana's elimination from the 2026 FIFA World Cup. Mofokeng had initially been set to leave South Africa before the start of the last season. However, he communicated his desire to the club's chairman, stating that he wished to remain in the country to help Orlando Pirates secure the league title before pursuing an overseas contract.
"I was also supposed to leave but I told the chairman that I won’t leave before I win you the league," Mofokeng stated during an interview with SNAWA on Metro FM. The young player expressed a strong emotional attachment to the club, feeling that he was not ready to depart and wanting to fight for his team.
"I think when I did that the chairman was very happy, that’s why I’m very proud to be one of the players who won the league with Pirates," he added.
Mofokeng joins Royale Union Saint-Gilloise after establishing himself in the first team of the Buccaneers. He had progressed through the club's youth academy, and his departure marks a significant step in his career after making a substantial impact in the league.
