Late Sale penalty try extends Harlequins' losing streak

The Premiership match between Sale and Harlequins ended with a late penalty try that secured a 28-24 win for Sale at the CorpAcq Stadium on 11 October 2026. This match marked Harlequins' third consecutive defeat of the season. The Sharks produced a comeback victory, taking the lead with a penalty try in the 73rd minute after Marcus Smith had scored twice in the first quarter, giving Quins an early advantage.

Despite finally scoring points this season, the loss kept Harlequins at the bottom of the table. Following a heavy 48-0 loss to Gloucester the previous week, Harlequins showed improved resilience with Smith making his season debut after recovering from a finger injury. Sale, though not at their best, managed to grind out the win, marking their fifth consecutive victory against Quins across all competitions.

Harlequins led 17-14 at halftime, scoring three tries while having two more disallowed due to TMO review. Sam Riley opened the scoring early in the third minute with a try, enabled by a combination between Smith and George Furbank in midfield. Smith then added his first try after a well-executed play by Furbank. The Sharks, missing Tom Curry due to illness, responded through a try from Elia Canakaivata on his debut. Smith quickly retaliated with his second try after capitalizing on poor defense from Sale.

Gus Warr’s try just before halftime kept Sale close on the scoreboard. The second half saw Riley break through for another Harlequins try, which offered them a bonus point. Nevertheless, Sale clawed back with Ben Bamber’s try, facilitated by a break from Nicky Smith and a key line-out steal by Courtney Lawes. In a crucial moment, a penalty try was awarded to Sale after a maul pushed Quins back 30 meters, with Riley being sent to the sin-bin.

This victory marked a turning point for Sale, coming off two wins in their last two matches against Saracens and Quins. Harlequins' head coach, Jason Gilmore, expressed pride in his team’s efforts but emphasized the need for consistent performances. Sale’s director of rugby, Alex Sanderson, acknowledged the team’s struggles but highlighted the importance of finding ways to win, looking ahead to their next match against Glasgow.
