Sundowns Near Major Signing of Antonio Van Wyk
Newsroom
Mamelodi Sundowns were close to finalising a deal with SV Ried for former Stellenbosch FC winger Antonio Van Wyk. SABC Sport journalist Mazola Molefe first reported last week that Sundowns held talks with the Austrian Bundesliga side regarding Van Wyk.
The club aimed to sign the former Stellenbosch winger to strengthen its squad ahead of the next season. The latest information received by iDiski Times indicated that Sundowns and Ried reached an agreement for the winger, and personal terms were reportedly not an issue as Van Wyk had already completed medicals for the move last week.
The 24-year-old made 53 appearances for Ried over the last two seasons, scoring four goals and providing seven assists, contributing to his team's promotion to the top tier last season. Van Wyk came through the Ubuntu Academy and had been linked with moves abroad as a teenager; however, when the COVID-19 pandemic limited movement, he decided to sign for Stellenbosch FC. He spent three years in the Cape Winelands before joining SV Ried in 2024.
Despite his success in Europe, Van Wyk had yet to make a significant impact in the Bafana Bafana squad, although he earned four senior caps and scored one goal for the national team during the Cosafa Cup.
