This year's NBA Finals marked a rematch from the previous championship series that the New York Knicks participated in, which concluded at the end of the 1998-99 season. During that Finals, the San Antonio Spurs defeated the Knicks in five games. Nearly 30 years later, the Knicks had another opportunity to compete for the championship.
As of June 6, the odds for NBA Finals MVP at FanDuel Sportsbook indicated a competitive race, particularly as both teams prepared for critical performances.
2025-26 NBA Finals MVP Odds
- Jalen Brunson: -105 (bet $10 to win $19.52 total)
- Karl-Anthony Towns: +185 (bet $10 to win $28.50 total)
- Victor Wembanyama: +410 (bet $10 to win $51 total)
Before the Finals commenced, Wembanyama and Brunson appeared to be the frontrunners for the MVP, according to the odds. However, with the Knicks leading the series 2-0, Karl-Anthony Towns emerged as a significant contender. Towns, who had played evenly against Wembanyama in the first two games, positioned himself second on the board following a solid performance where he scored 21 points (8-for-12 shooting), grabbed 13 rebounds, and contributed four assists in Game 2. The Knicks secured a narrow victory by one point in that game.
In Game 2, Brunson contributed 20 points but struggled with his shooting, going 7-for-25 from the field, and had four turnovers. Wembanyama excelled in Game 1, tallying 26 points, 12 rebounds, and three blocks, then followed up with a strong Game 2 where he recorded 29 points, nine rebounds, and four blocks.
As the series progressed, attention focused on whether the Knicks could sustain their lead against the Spurs.
