Scotland's Chances for Knockout Round Qualification

Scotland remained on the brink of making history after finishing third in Group C following a 3-0 defeat to Brazil, but their fate was out of their hands. Vinicius Junior struck first after a mistake from Scott McKenna. The defender was caught in possession by Rayan, who prodded the ball across to Vinicius for a simple tap-in after rounding the goalkeeper. Vinicius then nodded in a second goal on the stroke of half-time, and Matheus Cunha scored a third on the hour mark. Steve Clarke’s side had defeated Haiti in their opening match before a slim 1-0 loss to Morocco. The defeat to Brazil left them with just three points and an agonizing wait to determine if they would make it into the knockout rounds.

From 12 groups, only the best eight third placed finishers would progress. This meant Scotland needed four teams to finish third with fewer than three points or a worse goal difference than theirs (-3) to qualify. Unfortunately for them, the Scots might not know their fate until the final group stage matches had been played, resulting in a wait until Sunday and the conclusion of Group J’s fixtures.

Following their defeat to Brazil, Scotland’s advancement to the next stage of the tournament—marking their first time in the knockout rounds—was beyond their control. Over the next few days, certain results had to fall in their favor for them to secure a place in the last-32. In Group A, after Mexico beat the Czech Republic, South Africa’s win against South Korea further dented Scotland’s hopes, as South Korea was third with a goal difference of just -1, making them a superior-ranked third-place team.

In Group B, Bosnia and Herzegovina finished on four points, already ranking above Scotland in the third-place table. In Group D, Australia and Paraguay were second and third but met in their final game; the losers of that match would end the group with three points, while a draw would leave both on four points, positioning them ahead of Scotland. In Group E, Ecuador and Curacao had one point each, playing Germany and Ivory Coast respectively. Failure to win would ensure the third-place finisher had a lower total than Scotland's three points.

Group F's current third-placed team, Sweden, faced Japan. Japan needed to win that match, ensuring Sweden’s goal difference ended worse than Scotland’s (-3). In Group G, Egypt played Iran, where a win for Egypt indicated that the third-placed team—either Iran or Belgium—would have fewer than Scotland’s three points. Group H saw Spain needing to beat Uruguay so the third-placed team could only finish on two points. In Group I, a draw between Senegal and Iraq was the ideal result, but a small win for either team would also benefit Scotland.

Group J had Austria and Algeria in second and third respectively, both with three points. Scotland required an Austria win, as a draw would allow Algeria to surpass Scotland. Group K included DR Congo and Uzbekistan, where a draw or a narrow win for Uzbekistan would have been ideal outcomes for Scotland. Finally, in Group L, England needed to potentially aid Scotland; if Croatia secured a point or better against Ghana, the third-place finisher would surpass Scotland. Conversely, a significant win for Ghana and Panama not beating England would be Scotland's perfect scenario.

Should Scotland qualify for the knockout rounds, they were set to face Group A winners Mexico in the last-32. If they emerged victorious, they could then encounter England in the round of 16, contingent upon England finishing top of Group L and defeating Algeria in their first knockout match. A win against England could lead to a potential rematch against Brazil, or a matchup with Japan, Ivory Coast, or Norway in the quarter-finals.
