Former San Francisco 49ers linebacker Aldon Smith was delivering pizzas to a charity for homeless individuals when he was discovered unresponsive. Smith passed away on Saturday, June 12, 2026, at the age of 36. Bay Area businessman Amir Shirazi was with Smith during the pizza delivery. Shirazi reported to the San Francisco Chronicle that he found Smith slumped over in his truck outside his home, showing slight twitching. He suspected that Smith had either suffered a seizure or a heart attack.
Emergency services were called, and Shirazi attempted to administer CPR until paramedics arrived. Unfortunately, Smith was pronounced dead shortly after arriving at a local hospital in San Jose. The exact cause of death remains unreported.
Witnesses described Smith as appearing tired and lethargic during the pizza delivery, according to the charity's co-founder. A 2011 first-round draft pick, Smith had a promising career, amassing 19.5 sacks in his second NFL season. However, personal issues and legal troubles overshadowed his athletic achievements.
During his career, he faced multiple arrests, including a DUI in 2013 and a bomb threat incident at Los Angeles International Airport. After a series of infractions, including a hit-and-run, the 49ers released Smith in 2015, leading to a one-year NFL suspension that was later extended to an indefinite ban.
Recently, Smith had relocated back to the Bay Area and was experiencing financial difficulties while waiting to qualify for his NFL pension. He had reportedly visited the 49ers' facility to mentor rookies during organized activities before his untimely death. Shirazi spoke fondly of Smith, stating, "He was a very sweet, caring, loving giant. If you really knew him, you’d know who he truly is."
