Cameron Smith reassured about LIV Golf's future amidst funding issues

Cameron Smith, the Australian golfer, received assurances that LIV Golf would continue despite uncertainties surrounding its funding. Following the withdrawal of financial support from Saudi Arabia, concerns about the future of the breakaway league arose. On May 6, 2026, Smith discussed the situation, stating, "Since joining LIV, I have learnt to deal with speculation and reports, so it hasn’t really changed."

Smith addressed assurance about the future of LIV Golf after this year, saying, "Every assurance. Absolutely. That’s the goal, 100%." While he did not specify who provided these assurances, he noted that further information would come from another source.

During a teleconference with Australian media from Virginia, where LIV Golf’s next tournament was scheduled to begin on Thursday, Smith remarked, "It’s just so fresh, so there’s nothing really to say. I know the team are working hard behind the scenes and they’re doing everything they can for us."

He expressed optimism regarding LIV Golf CEO Scott O’Neil's excitement about the progress in the coming months. Smith, who is 32 years old, laughed off rumors about his potential retirement, stating, "I have got a while yet."

Since joining LIV Golf, he accrued over $50 million in prize money after reportedly signing for a fee of about $100 million. Smith leads the all-Australian Ripper GC team, which includes players Marc Leishman, Lucas Herbert, and Elvis Smylie. He holds a 25% equity stake in the team.

LIV Golf aims for a $300 million valuation for its 13 teams, seeking new private investors. Nick Adams, Ripper GC's boss, mentioned that the team values could reach $1 billion, indicating that Smith could gain an additional $250 million if sold at such a price.

However, Smith acknowledged his recent struggles on the course, particularly heading into the upcoming US PGA Championship in Pennsylvania. He had missed the halfway cut in all four majors last year, and also did not make it past the weekend at the Masters last month. Smith emphasized his commitment to improvement, saying, "I am making a few changes and trying to get back to where I was and better. I can promise you, the fire is in the belly, it’s just a matter of time."
