In the lead-up to the WAFU B U20 Championship, Ahmed Musa, the former captain of the Super Eagles, provided a cash gift of two million naira to the players of Nigeria’s U20 national team, the Flying Eagles. This gesture occurred as the team intensified its preparations for the tournament scheduled from July 26 to August 9, 2026, in Cote d’Ivoire.
Musa, who holds the record as Nigeria’s most-capped international player with 111 appearances and notable performances with four goals in two FIFA World Cup matches in 2014 and 2018, presented the cash to the team through its coordinator, Alhaji Abubakar Abubakar. He urged the players to remain focused as they prepare for the upcoming championship, which will determine the WAFU B zone’s representatives for the Africa U20 Cup of Nations next year.
The 2013 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) winner, who previously played for the Flying Eagles and helped them secure the Africa U20 Cup of Nations title in South Africa in 2011, emphasized that the real beginnings of a professional football career are marked at the U20 level. He highlighted how achievements at this stage can significantly influence a player’s career trajectory.
In response to Musa's generous gesture, Flying Eagles' captain Simon Habila expressed gratitude on behalf of the players, assuring Musa that the team is diligently preparing and is confident in their ability to make Nigerians proud.
