Dodgers Make Key Trades Before MLB Deadline

The Los Angeles Dodgers made significant moves leading up to the MLB trade deadline on Monday, showcasing their strategy beyond the standout acquisition of Tarik Skubal from the Detroit Tigers. This deal was finalized late Saturday night, and Skubal’s debut with the Dodgers was scheduled for Tuesday at Wrigley Field.

Before Monday’s deadline, the atmosphere for the Dodgers was particularly busy. An MRI on Dalton Rushing revealed an elbow strain, prompting Dodgers president of baseball operations Andrew Friedman and general manager Brandon Gomes to bolster their catching position. They completed four trades, including one for their most sought-after target, Skubal.

The trades included:
- Acquiring left-hander Tarik Skubal from the Detroit Tigers in exchange for No. 26 overall prospect outfielder Zyhir Hope (Double A), No. 40 prospect right-hander River Ryan (Triple A), and right-hander Brady Smith (Class A).
- Acquiring catcher Ben Rortvedt (AAA) from the New York Mets for right-hander Chayce McDermott (designated for assignment on July 31).
- Acquiring left-hander Kris Bubic from the Kansas City Royals for right-hander Carlos Duran (AAA).
- Acquiring catcher Hunter Feduccia and right-hander Jacob Kmatz (AA) from the Tampa Bay Rays for outfielder Jack Suwinski (AAA) and international bonus pool money.

With Will Smith sidelined for three to four weeks due to a neck issue, the Dodgers had already initiated discussions about their catching depth before Rushing's injury escalated the need for quick decisions. Initially perceived as a manageable situation, Rushing's withdrawal due to arm irritation heightened the urgency for the Dodgers.

Friedman and Gomes did not want to be caught off guard by an injury to Rushing. Consequently, they rekindled negotiations with Rortvedt on Sunday evening. Rortvedt’s previous experience with the Dodgers helped alleviate the concerns over catching during this unexpected crisis.

Eliezer Alfonzo, who started in a game against the Cubs, had Chuckie Robinson called up from Triple A as an emergency catcher. Rortvedt and Feduccia were expected to join the team in Chicago on Tuesday, with Rortvedt likely getting the majority of the starts behind the plate.

Manager Dave Roberts expressed confidence in Rortvedt, citing his familiarity with the pitching staff as crucial for their operational success amid the injuries. Meanwhile, the Dodgers remained optimistic about Rushing's timeline, although they were cautious not to provide a definitive recovery outlook.

The Dodgers aimed to equip themselves for the final two months of the season, ensuring depth and readiness for the postseason. Bubic, who has been recovering from injury, will also play a significant role as the Dodgers prepare their pitching staff for an impactful October.
