Several Athletes Go Missing After Competing in Glasgow

Following the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, Scottish police investigated reports from various media outlets in Uganda and Pakistan regarding the absence of several athletes, including five boxers, who did not return with their delegations. The Games, which concluded on Sunday, saw participation from 3,000 competitors. While the exact number of missing athletes remains unclear, authorities focused on the Ugandan boxing team, as four of its six members failed to join the rest of the delegation for their return journey to Uganda. 'NBS Sport' identified the athletes as Nuhu Batte, Angel Katushabe, Ibrahim Khemis, and Emily Nakalema. The motivations behind these potential defections are not fully known; however, one of the four boxers told a Ugandan media outlet that the group intended to seek asylum in Scotland and continue their careers there, believing that they would have access to better training facilities and more opportunities. The athlete requested understanding and asked for parallel judgments to be made. The Scottish police confirmed to Reuters that an investigation had been initiated and that cooperation with the Home Office had begun. "We have received reports about several missing athletes. Investigations are underway to clarify the circumstances, and we are collaborating with the Home Office," stated a spokesperson. The Home Office conducts more thorough checks before major sports events and may take action if they are aware of breaches of immigration law, although they typically do not comment on individual asylum cases.
