'We aimed to surprise everyone' - Crosswinds energize Giro d'Italia Women stage 6
Newsroom

Stage 6 of the Giro d'Italia Women unfolded with unexpected excitement as crosswinds split the peloton into three groups, although the final outcome saw the sprinters claim the day. Elisa Balsamo (Lidl-Trek) secured her fourth victory despite the challenges, showcasing her sprinting prowess after two preceding demanding mountain stages.
The troubles began with 64km remaining when Uno-X Mobility leveraged the narrow streets of Volta Mantovana. The team utilized local rider Alessia Vigilia's knowledge to navigate through a brief uphill and a steep, winding descent, aiming to split the pack in the ensuing crosswinds. The strategy brought six of their seven riders to the front right before the critical moment, leading to an initial split in the peloton.
Sport director Nicolas Marche explained the tactic: "We knew the full bunch was aiming for a bunch sprint, and people will not be as focused, especially 64km from the finish. We saw this opportunity, and Alessia confirmed that it was a good option." As a result, a leading group of 28 riders emerged, including marked GC contenders like Anna van der Breggen (SD Worx-Protime), Antonia Niedermaier (Canyon-SRAM), and Niamh Fisher-Black (Lidl-Trek).
Uno-X Mobility's strategy capitalized on this split, driving the group to create a racing dynamic where GC interests met stage contenders. "We aimed to surprise everyone and create a group with people who have GC interests and others going for the stage. A reduced group would have been ideal for us, to sprint for a top result with Linda [Zanetti]," Marche noted.
Van der Breggen, initially caught out by the first split but soon regrouping with teammates, emphasized the importance of positioning during such dynamics. She stated, "We knew something could happen at that point, so we were at the front. The wind would come from the side, after a technical passage through a town with small streets and a downhill. It split up for a small moment, and it is always better to be in the first group than in the second or third."
The second group of 42 riders trailed by merely nine seconds, consisting of notable names like Demi Vollering (FDJ United-Suez) and white jersey holder Isabella Holmgren (Lidl-Trek). Team efforts to close the gap intensified, but it was a systematic approach that eventually led UAE Team ADQ and their allies to reconnect with the leading pack with 56.7 km left.
Despite a vigorous attempt from FDJ United-Suez, it was a patient strategy that proved effective in retrieving teammates, as they navigated the course's unpredictability. The race showed a blend of aggressive tactics and strategic play, culminating in another thrilling stage of the Giro d'Italia Women.
