Bristol Bears lose Gabriel Ibitoye for up to four months

Bristol Bears suffered a significant setback in their quest for the Premiership play-offs, as winger Gabriel Ibitoye was ruled out for the rest of the season due to a torn hamstring. Ibitoye left the field during the second half of the team's defeat against Saracens last weekend, and he is expected to be sidelined for three to four months. In addition to Ibitoye, hooker Gabriel Oghre, back row Benjamin Grondona, lock Pedro Rubiolo, and number eight Viliame Mata have all been ruled out for an extended period in the past five weeks.

Director of rugby Pat Lam confirmed the news on BBC Radio Bristol, stating, "He [Ibitoye] got caught in a tackle which ruptured his hamstring, so Gabs is gone for the season now; he'll have surgery. He's going to be back in three, four months, so he'll be back for the start of next season."

This injury marks another chapter in a season marred by injury troubles for the Bears, with Ibitoye having already missed the first four months of the season due to a leg injury suffered in the opening match of the Premiership campaign. During the winter months, Bristol struggled with player availability, at one point lacking enough backs to conduct a full training session, relying heavily on academy players. Currently, the club is below the required threshold for English-qualified players (an average of 15 per game), forcing Lam to navigate squad selections carefully.

In more encouraging news, flanker Steven Luatua is nearing a return from the hamstring injury that sidelined him for the past month, as is fly-half AJ MacGinty, who has been absent since September due to an Achilles injury. Lam expressed optimism about their potential return, indicating they could be available for the last two rounds of Premiership matches.

With only three rounds left in the Premiership, last weekend's loss to Saracens has left Bristol in fifth place, five points behind Exeter, who is in fourth. The defeat also allowed Saracens to close the gap to just two points behind the Bears in the playoff race. Bristol's upcoming matches include facing off against Northampton and Bath, the first and second teams in the table, before concluding their season against Sale away in the final round. "All we can do is win the next game, and the next game is Friday night against top-of-the-table at Saints - that’s all we can worry about," Lam said. "I’m focused on what we do. If we miss out on points it’s disappointing, but if we gain points it’s fantastic. There’s five points we need to try to go down and get. Northampton will be a tough game coming off a big loss to Leicester - everything is up for grabs Friday night."
