Victor Mbaoma Reflects on Remo Stars' Dramatic Win

Victor Mbaoma, captain of Remo Stars F.C., revealed the intense emotions surrounding the team's comeback victory over Bayelsa United F.C. during a crucial Nigeria Premier Football League match at Remo Stars Stadium. In an interview with PREMIUM TIMES, Mbaoma characterized the match as one of the toughest of the season, as the Sky Blue Stars fought back from an early setback to secure a vital 2-1 win that significantly impacted both teams in the NPFL standings.

Bayelsa United started strong, taking the lead in the eighth minute when Ofem Nneoyi scored, silencing the home crowd. However, Remo Stars equalized through former Rivers United F.C. midfielder Alex Oyowah just before halftime. Mbaoma then completed the comeback with his decisive goal in the 64th minute. This victory kept Remo Stars' hopes of avoiding relegation alive heading into the final matchday, while it confirmed Bayelsa United's relegation to the Nigeria National League.

Reflecting on the challenging nature of the match, Mbaoma said, "It was hard. I mean it was very hard. Although we expected something like this, it was far beyond what we expected. Even when they scored, all heads were let loose and it was very hard. You know, coming back from that."

He also shared the emotional turmoil he experienced after conceding so early in such a high-stakes match, stating, "All I was saying in my mind was, Jesus, Jesus. I was confused. I was overwhelmed. I mean, is it the right word? Overwhelmed or something? Shocked, exactly. But I was like, I know we can do it. We just have to push."

Mbaoma’s decisive strike provoked ecstatic celebrations among the Remo Stars supporters. He emphasized that the goal held significant emotional weight, not for personal glory, but for the team’s quest for survival. "I was very happy. It was as if the heavens should open. I was very happy because it means a lot to the team. Not even for myself, but for the team. Because if the team escapes this, it will be my greatest joy."

With that goal, Mbaoma increased his season tally to 13, solidifying his position as one of the NPFL's most impactful forwards. Yet, he maintained that individual success is secondary to the team’s overall objectives, asserting, "For me, I’m happy because the team is doing well. It would be very sad if I was pushing like this for my goals and the team is yet to leave the relegation waters."

Mbaoma concluded by praising his teammates, reiterating that football is a collective effort. "I didn’t take the ball from the goalpost to the other goal for me to go and score. So it’s a team game. I really have to appreciate my team and my guys. The team must always come first."
