Farrell Keeps Door Open for Lowe's Return to World Cup

Head coach Andy Farrell stated that former Leinster winger James Lowe is unlikely to represent Ireland while he is playing in Japan, but he did not fully dismiss the option of selecting Lowe for the 2027 World Cup. Currently 33, Lowe departed Leinster at the end of the 2025-26 season after failing to reach a new agreement with the Irish province and the United Rugby Championship winners. Throughout Farrell's tenure, which included winning two Six Nations titles and a Grand Slam in 2023, Lowe has been a significant contributor, and Farrell expressed his disappointment about Lowe's move away from the team.
Lowe has been strongly associated with a transfer to Tokyo Suntory Sungoliath, potentially replacing the outgoing South African winger Cheslin Kolbe. The Irish Rugby Football Union (IRFU) typically enforces a policy of selecting only players who participate for one of the four provinces, with exceptions like Johnny Sexton during his time at Racing 92. Farrell commented on the IRFU's policy, stating, "You know that we've held the line with that for many, many years but we’ll see how that plays out in the next 12 months."
Farrell acknowledged the importance of developing talent domestically, explaining that it might not be in the best interest to opt for a player overseas without fostering local talent. In Lowe's absence, Jamie Osborne received the starting position on the left wing for Ireland's opening Nations Championship match against Australia on July 4. Injuries have also left Ireland without wings Tommy O'Brien, Shayne Bolton, and Mack Hansen.
Lowe made his Ireland debut in 2020 after qualifying through the residency rule. Farrell characterized Lowe as a "larger-than-life character" and clarified that it is not within his purview to involve himself in contract negotiations. He expressed respect for Lowe's accomplishments and wishes Lowe success with his new contract in Japan.
Farrell noted that Lowe would be "thoroughly missed" but emphasized the need for the team to adapt and find new players to fill the gap Lowe leaves behind. He mentioned that the team faces challenges every season, akin to missing key players for various reasons, and that it is simply part of rugby life. Farrell wished Lowe all the best as he embarks on this new chapter.
