Mario Balotelli presents Ghana jersey to Mayor Zohran Mamdani

Mario Balotelli, the former Italy and Manchester City star, met New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani on July 1, 2026, following his visit to the United States. Balotelli was in the country for a holiday and was closely following the ongoing World Cup, despite Italy's absence from the tournament. Recently, he made a television appearance wearing a Ghana jersey, displaying his solidarity with the country of his parents.

"There is no Italy in the World Cup, so I support Ghana. I am from Ghana, and I'm proud. I love the players. Semenyo, I love the way he plays. I think 2010 was the best team of Ghana," said the 35-year-old player.

During his visit, Balotelli, along with his brother Enoch, presented a Ghanaian jersey featuring his name to Mayor Mamdani. The mayor reportedly tweeted about Balotelli just before the World Cup, mentioning that New York would ensure the best tournament experience, referencing a statement from the striker who mentioned he doesn’t celebrate his goals because he is just doing his job.

Their relationship has strengthened over time, with Balotelli and Mamdani seen playing football together recently. Mamdani has gained popularity due to his sports enthusiasm, actively supporting the New York Knocks in their quest to end a 53-year wait for the NBA title. He is also a dedicated Arsenal fan, celebrating his favorite Premier League club's success after a 22-year trophy drought.
