Icelandic goalkeeper Hallgrímsson renews with Barça until 2029

Icelandic goalkeeper Viktor Hallgrímsson renewed his contract with FC Barcelona until June 30, 2029. The announcement was made by the club on Tuesday, August 3, 2026. Hallgrímsson expressed his joy about the renewal, stating, "I am very happy. This was always my goal when I signed a two-year contract: to work hard to renew for a longer time. This club has been my dream club for many years, since I was young, and my first year has been fantastic."

At 26 years old, Hallgrímsson joined Barcelona last summer from Polish club Orlen Wisla Plock. Under the management of Carlos Ortega during his first season, he made significant contributions to the team’s complete haul of national and international titles. In the Liga Asobal, he led the league with the highest save percentage at 37% and achieved a 30.96% success rate in the Champions League, placing him among the top goalkeepers in that competition.

“I like everything about being here: the city, the club, my teammates. I know the goalkeeping coach, Tomas Svensson, very well. Both he and Carlos Ortega have done really well this year. Everything has worked great in my first year. My partner has also been great personally, so it was hard to imagine being anywhere else,” Hallgrímsson said.

With this renewal and the signing of Spanish international Sergey Hernández, who also has a contract until 2029, the Barcelona team has secured their goalkeeping position for the next three seasons. Hallgrímsson commented on his new teammate, "It will be fun to work together, and I have only heard positive things about him. He played in Magdeburg with several of my Icelandic national teammates, and they speak highly of him. He is a fun guy who likes to talk, which is good for me because I am more shy. I think we will make a great combination, and he is a great goalkeeper with a different style than mine. It will be a good mix."
