Chargers retain McDaniel as offensive playcaller amid losses

The Los Angeles Chargers confirmed that offensive coordinator Mike McDaniel will continue as the playcaller, despite the team's winless start to the season. Coach Jim Harbaugh announced this decision on Wednesday, expressing confidence in McDaniel’s talent and work ethic. "We're very confident in Mike and his talent, his work ethic and his ability," Harbaugh stated, as reported by The Athletic. Harbaugh made the announcement following the team's self-evaluation during their bye week.

Before entering Week 7, the Chargers suffered a disappointing 6-22 defeat to the Kansas City Chiefs, scoring only six points in what marked their season-low output. This loss brought the Chargers' record to 0-6, making them the only winless team in the league this season. The performance dropped their already struggling scoring average to a league-worst 15.0 points per game.

McDaniel, who was let go from his previous role as the head coach of the Miami Dolphins in January after four seasons, joined the Chargers in the off-season. His primary objective was to rejuvenate a Chargers offense that had managed just one touchdown in two playoff losses. He aimed to assist quarterback Justin Herbert, whom he regards as exceptionally talented, in mastering the quarterback position.

To facilitate Herbert's improvement, McDaniel implemented a change in his shotgun stance, positioning Herbert's left foot in front of his right. This adjustment mirrored previous changes McDaniel facilitated for other quarterbacks, notably Tua Tagovailoa during his own successful stint in Miami, which included a Pro Bowl appearance in Year 2. Herbert underwent practice adjustments, taking breaks from throwing to focus on footwork, using a green water ball to practice his throwing motion while McDaniel offered oversight.

Despite these efforts, the Chargers' offense struggled significantly under McDaniel’s guidance, leading to a considerable decline in Herbert’s performance. He has thrown eight interceptions this season, tying him for the NFL lead. Notably, interceptions have come from plays against the Buffalo Bills and Seattle Seahawks, directly impacting the team’s prospects as they continue to seek their first victory.
