Northamptonshire continued their strong performance in this season's T20 Blast by achieving a thrilling seven-run victory over Durham at Banks Homes Riverside, Chester-le-Street. This victory marked their fifth consecutive win as they defended a target of 146 runs, maintaining their position at the top of the Central and West Group.
In a low-scoring encounter, Northants posted a total of 145-9, with Justin Broad leading the scoring with 36 runs off 32 balls. Left-arm spinner Callum Parkinson made a significant contribution to Durham's woes with impressive bowling figures of 3-19. While Ben McKinney top-scored for Durham with 33 runs, they managed only 138-8 in their chase.
The game began with a challenging powerplay for Durham, as captain David Willey struck early by dismissing Graham Clark for a loose shot to backward point. Despite a promising start from McKinney, who hit two fours and a six during the fourth over, Durham's innings faltered. The excellent bowling of Ben Sanderson (2-26) saw him take key wickets in quick succession, leading to Durham's score dropping to 41-3.
As the innings progressed, Northants maintained pressure with wickets tumbling. McKinney's dismissal for 33 left Durham reeling at 53-4. Though Will Rhodes and Ben Raine attempted to stabilize the chase, they ultimately fell short, resulting in Durham being bowled out for just 138 runs.
Northants' bowlers excelled under pressure, notably James Sales, who effectively defended 14 runs in the final over while taking two wickets for just 10 runs in his two overs. This victory reinforced Northamptonshire's exceptional start to the tournament.
