Matthews Signs New Deal with Gloucester-Hartpury

Alex Matthews, the vice-captain of the England women's rugby team, has officially signed a new contract to remain with Gloucester-Hartpury, the reigning champions of Premiership Women’s Rugby (PWR). The 32-year-old back row player joined the club in 2022 and has been instrumental in their success, contributing to all three PWR titles the team has secured over the past three seasons.

With an impressive record of 82 caps for the Red Roses, Matthews is currently part of the squad competing in the Six Nations tournament. Unfortunately, she missed the recent match against Scotland due to a shoulder injury, but her commitment to the team remains unwavering. "I’m really pleased to have extended my time with Gloucester-Hartpury," Matthews expressed. "We’ve built something really special here over the past few years, and it’s a group I love being a part of. I’m excited to keep pushing, developing my game, and creating more success with this team."

The specifics of Matthews' new contract have not been disclosed by the club. Her journey in rugby began with her England debut in 2011, and she has been a part of World Cup-winning squads in 2014, 2017, and 2025. This season, Matthews has started in nine of Gloucester-Hartpury’s 14 matches, helping the team maintain a perfect record at the top of the PWR table.

Dan Murphy, the head of rugby at Gloucester-Hartpury, praised Matthews as a "hugely influential player". He noted, "Her experience at the very highest level, combined with the physicality and skillset she brings, makes her a key part of this squad. She’s been central to the success we’ve had over the past few seasons, and we’re really pleased she’s committed her future to the club."

As Matthews continues her journey with Gloucester-Hartpury, fans and teammates alike are eager to see how her leadership and skills will contribute to the team's ongoing success in the league.
