2026 World Cup: Malang Sarr Absent, Pape Thiaw Takes Charge

In the lead-up to the 2026 World Cup, Malang Sarr will not be part of the Senegalese squad, as confirmed by coach Pape Thiaw. Despite his notable performance as a defender for RC Lens and his inclusion in this season's Ligue 1 Team of the Year, Sarr was not selected for the national team. Speculation had suggested that some senior team members were opposed to his inclusion, although Idrissa Gana Gueye has reportedly denied these claims.

Pape Thiaw addressed the situation, stating, "You mention Malang Sarr. We have been hearing about him for some time. He is an excellent player whom I have spoken with; he is a disciplined young man. I congratulated him for being among the eleven best players in Ligue 1. I discussed with Malang twice: first, to talk with him, and second, to congratulate him. But there are choices I have made, and I take responsibility for them. I have included Malang on my reserve list because in football, you never know."

Sarr’s absence continues to stir debate as fans and analysts reflect on the team’s composition and strategies ahead of the tournament.
