Poland 2026: Falconets defeat Malawi 2-0 in Ikenne

The Nigeria U-20 women's football team, known as the Falconets, secured a 2-0 victory against Malawi in the first leg of the FIFA U20 Women’s World Cup final round qualifying match held in Ikenne-Remo on May 2, 2026. This win enhanced Nigeria's prospects of qualifying for the FIFA U20 Women’s World Cup, a tournament in which they have participated since its inception as an U19 event in Canada in 2002.

Despite the final score suggesting an easy match, the Falconets faced challenges in the first half, where they created numerous scoring opportunities but were unable to convert, due in part to the impressive performance of Malawi’s goalkeeper, Emily Nkhwazi. Nigeria dominated possession from the start, utilizing the width of the field to pressure Malawi’s defense. However, the first half concluded without a goal to show for their efforts.

After the halftime break, the match took a turn. The adjustments made by Coach Moses Adukwu led to a more aggressive approach in the second half. In the 47th minute, Nigeria's persistence paid off when a well-placed cross caused confusion in the Malawian defense, resulting in an own goal by Maureen Kenneth.

This goal sparked a resurgence in the Falconets' attack. Just ten minutes later, a well-executed attack culminated in a goal from Kindness Ifeanyi, who received a precise assist from Faridat Abdulwahab, doubling Nigeria's lead.

Malawi attempted to mount a comeback, but Nigeria's defense remained robust, ensuring the Falconets maintained their advantage. For this victory, the Falconets were rewarded with 1 Million Naira from Hon. Kunle Soname, President of Remo Stars FC and Beyond Limits Football Academy, who had pledged 500,000 Naira for each goal scored before the match.

The return leg is set to take place at Bingu National Stadium in Lilongwe on May 9, 2026, with kickoff scheduled for 3 PM local time (2 PM Nigeria time).
