Grass Technology Aids USA in World Cup Victory

The 2026 FIFA World Cup commenced amid praise for the impeccable grass surfaces in the stadiums, particularly noted by U.S. national team defender Antonee "Jedi" Robinson. Following their opening match against Paraguay, where the USA secured a 4-0 victory, Robinson remarked, "It’s probably the best field I've ever played on in the States."

With half of the 16 venues across the U.S., Canada, and Mexico lacking natural grass fields, FIFA faced challenges installing high-quality temporary surfaces. Concerns had been prevalent due to past experiences of players with poor turf during the Gold Cup and Copa América tournaments. Players had regularly criticized the inferior playing conditions, especially on hastily laid grass. Robinson noted, "Usually, it’s shocking" concerning the temporary fields used for previous events.

In preparing for this World Cup, FIFA began addressing the unique challenges posed by North America's diverse geography and climate nearly a decade prior. Unlike the compact footprint of Qatar, which hosted the last World Cup, this year’s tournament unfolded across varied altitudes and climates, from Mexico City at 7,200 feet to the New York-New Jersey area at sea level.

FIFA engaged turf specialists from Michigan State University and the University of Tennessee to ensure a consistent playing surface across all venues. Dr. John Sorokin of Tennessee highlighted advancements in grow-light technology and hybrid field installations, allowing for high-quality grass performance. "We’ve done over 200 projects between the two universities," he said.

In Seattle, where the USA's next group game against Australia occurred, the specialized pitch was laid well in advance, allowing for adequate growth and preparation. Robinson praised the consistency of the surface, stating, "Just knowing how the surface is going to play consistently definitely helped us. Every time you hit a pass, you knew what the weight was going to be."

The overall reception to the grass quality was positive, with fellow player Alex Freeman agreeing that the field allowed for fast-paced gameplay. Gio Reyna's stoppage-time goal, which capped off a sequence of 26 consecutive passes, exemplified the benefits of a well-maintained playing surface. “It was really good,” Robinson stated, expressing gratitude for those involved in creating the ideal pitch.
