Queens and City Boys Challenge Nigeria's Football Tradition

Queens and City Boys showcased their potential at the grand finale of the President Federation Cup, stepping confidently onto the field against established football clubs in Nigeria. The excitement built ahead of the match scheduled for Saturday at the Stephen Keshi Stadium, Asaba, where the women's final was set to kick off at noon followed by the men's final at 4pm.
Heartland Queens, making their debut in the finals, garnered significant attention after defeating the well-known FC Robo Queens of Lagos in the semi-finals. FC Robo Queens had previously eliminated multi-titlists Rivers Angels in an earlier round, but they met their match against the Queens at the Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium in Benin City on Wednesday. Prior to their victory over FC Robo Queens, the Owerri team overcame Dragon Fury Ladies, Ahudiyannem Queens, and Ibom Angels in their path to the final.
The two-time champions, Nasarawa Amazons of Lafia, also made it to the finals after edging out Sunshine Queens of Akure in a closely contested semi-final match held at the Nnamdi Azikiwe Stadium, Enugu. However, the Amazons must remain cautious of the ambitious Heartland Queens. The Amazons, consistent in their performance, outplayed Osklean FC in the Round of 32 and secured another win through penalty shootouts against FC Naija Ratels of Abuja and the formidable Edo Queens.
In the men's final, the three-time champions El-Kanemi Warriors of Maiduguri were pitted against the newcomers Ikorodu City. Expectations ran high for this fierce contest, particularly as the victor would earn a ticket to represent Nigeria in the CAF Confederation Cup. El-Kanemi Warriors won the trophy in 1991 and 1992 and recently claimed their third title by defeating Abia Warriors in the 2024 final at the Mobolaji Johnson Arena in Lagos.
